Legal Awards 2021: Interview with Helen Clifford

We hear from Lawyer Monthly's Personal Injury Solicitor of the Year.

What led you to specialise in personal injury law?

My grandfather was a docker who lost his leg in an accident at work. My dad was a trade union shop steward before becoming a solicitor. I followed in his footsteps and trained with him. It was inspirational to see the difference my dad could make to the lives of his clients.

What motivates you most about your work?

No one should be injured or treated unfairly at work. I am passionate about righting wrongs. I act for those who have, in most cases, lost their livelihood as a result of their injuries. I help them to gain access to rehabilitation to enable them to make the best possible recovery from their injuries and compensation for their losses, past and future. My role is to offer support and advice throughout the claim. I am proud that many of my clients stay in contact with me long after their claims have been resolved. I also campaign for improved health and safety in the workplace.

How has your practice developed since its founding?

I set up the practice in June 2021. I am fortunate to be extremely busy. I am currently finalising claims for two clients with catastrophic brain injuries. I am also acting for survivors of the Bow crane collapse.

Is there any advice that you would give to someone studying to become a lawyer?

Be prepared to work hard. Choose an area of law that you enjoy and which motivates you.

What plans do you have for 2022?

I am planning to recruit. My priority is to continue to achieve excellent results for my clients.

About Helen Clifford

I am a solicitor with over 25 years’ experience of acting for injured and bereaved clients. I set up my firm in June 2021 to enable me to look after my clients in the way that I want to, by putting them at the heart of everything I do. Large law firms have an eye on profit and costs and this restricted the service I could offer. I can now provide the personal service my clients need, without commercial pressure. Unlike most firms, I do not charge my clients; my fees are limited to the costs I recover from the defendant.
