Patent Licensing of ESG Technologies

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Simone Frattasi, European Patent Attorney at Maersk and Ishak Jonas Isik, Head of Intellectual Property at Siemens Energy who discuss the patent licensing of ESG Technologies.

How did Maersk and Siemens Energy get involved with global financial technology company, IPwe?

Maersk and Siemens Energy became involved with IPwe through their joint establishment of the ESG Smart Pool. This partnership was initiated as part of Maersk’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2040 and Siemens Energy’s dedication to achieving climate neutrality in its operations by 2030. The collaboration aims to expedite the adoption of sustainable technologies through the pooling of related patents. IPwe, which is specializing in intellectual property strategy software and analytics, contributes with its Smart Intangible Asset Management (SIAM) software for hosting the ESG Smart Pool.

What exactly is the ESG Smart Pool and what are its aims?

The ESG Smart Pool is the world’s first ESG patent pool, founded by Maersk, Siemens Energy, and IPwe. Hosted on IPwe’s SIAM software, the pool comprises over 250 crucial patent assets owned by Maersk and Siemens Energy. Its primary aim is to streamline access to ESG-related innovations for innovators, start-ups, and global corporations. By offering expedited and cost-efficient patent licensing of ESG technologies, the ESG Smart Pool encourages organizations of all sizes and industries to adopt, comply with, and further innovate within ESG goals. The pool covers various technology areas, including electrical grid operations, energy systems, materials manufacturing, transportation, marine technology, defect detection, inspection, and communication arrangements.

Can you tell us how patent licensing of ESG technologies will work and what the benefits will be?

The patent licensing process within the ESG Smart Pool involves companies contributing their patents to the pool, which are then curated based on their relevance to ESG criteria and potential impact. This collaborative approach allows participating companies to access a diverse range of technologies efficiently. The benefits include faster development and adoption of sustainable solutions, overcoming common barriers to innovation such as high research costs and limited access to cutting-edge technologies. Through the pool, companies can expedite the implementation of ESG-related technologies, supporting their own ESG objectives while contributing to broader industry sustainability goals.

What are the future intentions of the ESG Smart Pool?

The ESG Smart Pool aims to grow its available assets by bringing on additional founders. This expansion will cover adjacent and complementary ESG technologies, further enabling members to access a broader range of innovations. The pool intends to continue facilitating collaboration among organizations, fostering the development and adoption of sustainable technologies across various industries. By creating a platform for sharing ESG-related innovations, the ESG Smart Pool envisions contributing to a more sustainable future.

How does the ESG Smart Pool help pressing environmental needs and create a sustainable future?

The ESG Smart Pool addresses pressing environmental needs and contributes to a sustainable future by accelerating the development and adoption of technologies that support ESG goals. By pooling patents and sharing knowledge, the collaborative efforts within the ESG Smart Pool act as a catalyst for sustainable innovation. The focus on a wide range of ESG-related technologies, from energy efficiency improvements to safety innovations, allows the pool to have a meaningful impact on addressing environmental challenges and fostering a more sustainable world.

Why should SMEs and large enterprises now engage with ESG Smart Pool?

SMEs and large enterprises should engage with the ESG Smart Pool for several reasons. First, membership in the pool provides access to a diverse range of ESG-related technologies, enabling companies to meet their ESG objectives faster. Second, the collaborative approach within the pool helps overcome common barriers to innovation, making it particularly beneficial for smaller organizations with limited resources. Additionally, engagement with the ESG Smart Pool aligns with the growing global emphasis on environmental sustainability and responsible business practices, positioning participating companies as leaders in the adoption of ESG-related innovations and contributing to a more sustainable future.
