Settlement Brings End To Zoom And RingCentral Dispute

A settlement has been agreed between Zoom Video Communications Inc and RingCentral Inc, bringing an end to a court dispute over RingCentral’s continued use of Zoom’s video conferencing technology after Zoom decided to cease their partnership.

A joint press release on Monday announced the two tech companies had resolved the case and will “continue to work together” throughout RingCentral’s transitions to a new video-conferencing service. 

San Jose, California-based Zoom sued RingCentral in 2021 after deciding not to renew an agreement that allowed RingCentral to resell Zoom’s service as a “RingCentral Meetings.”

Zoom claimed RingCentral was “dangling Zoom in front of potential customers to lure them into signing multi-year contracts” despite their deal being ended. It requested an undisclosed amount of money damages and to block RingCentral from using its trademarks in the future.

RingCentral responded to Zoom’s claims by saying that their agreement had not yet ended and said that Zoom was attempting to scare RingCentral customers into abandoning the service and signing up with Zoom instead. RingCentral asked the court for an order to prevent Zoom from taking away access for new RingCentral customers.

RingCentral’s request was denied by US District Judge Edward Davila. His decision was upheld by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in October.
