New Jersey Postmaster Charged with Civil Rights Violation for Sexual Assault of Postal Worker.

A two-count indictment was made public today, charging a U.S. Postal Service Postmaster with a federal civil rights violation for sexually assaulting a victim while acting under the authority of his position and for assaulting the victim, who is a federal employee, during her official duties.

The indictment states that on November 26, 2022, in Teaneck, New Jersey, Gabriel Ekram Pagabe Ali, 47, sexually assaulted the victim, a U.S. Postal Service employee, while he was serving as Postmaster at the Teaneck Post Office.

Count One of the indictment accuses Ali of violating the victim's right to bodily integrity through sexual assault. Count Two accuses him of forcibly assaulting the victim while she was performing her official responsibilities.

If found guilty, Ali could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison for the civil rights violation and eight years for the assault charge.

A federal district court judge will determine the final sentence, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.

The announcement was made by Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger for the District of New Jersey, and Special Agent in Charge Matthew Modafferi of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.

The investigation into the case is being conducted by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
