Three Yachts Catch Fire Early Friday Morning in Northwest Miami-Dade.
MIAMI-DADE, Fla. — A dramatic fire involving three yachts broke out early Friday morning in northwest Miami-Dade, prompting a major response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR). The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m., and emergency crews worked quickly to contain the blaze.
Explosion Ignites Yachts
The fire occurred near the Miami Marine Center marina and Jones Boat Yard, located off Northwest North River Drive. Jose Rojas, who works at Jones Boat Yard, described hearing a loud explosion, which shattered his bedroom window.
“I heard a loud explosion, and it broke my bedroom window,” Rojas said. “The yacht in the middle exploded.”
Firefighting Efforts
Upon arrival, fire crews launched a coordinated response from both land and water. They utilized foam operations to extinguish the flames. According to MDFR, the yachts were 60 feet long (two of them) and one was 90 feet long.
Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the fire, which had significant visible effects, with heavy smoke seen from the area. Despite the flames being under control, crews remained on-site to handle environmental concerns and manage fuel runoff from one of the yachts.
Environmental Impact and Response
MDFR deployed specialized equipment to minimize the environmental damage caused by the fire and its aftermath. Oil-absorbent booms—mesh-like sleeves containing absorbent materials—were used to soak up oil and surface sheen from the water.
“MDFR utilizes specialized oil spill response equipment that includes an oil-absorbent boom,” an MDFR representative said in an email. “This material helps soak up oil and other harmful substances from the water's surface.”
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the incident. Firefighters were able to control the fire without any casualties. The situation remains under investigation by local authorities.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and authorities are continuing their investigation. The explosions and subsequent fire raised concerns over safety at the marina, and investigators are working to figure out how the fire started.
