On March 3, Bradley Smith, 22 and Antonia Sullivan, 20 were returning to Bristol on a crowded easyJet flight. Shortly after take off, Smith, who is currently unemployed, was overheard requesting his girlfriend to engage in inappropriate behavior, prompting her to cover his lap with multiple coats. Their actions were observed by three passengers, including the unfortunate individual, who decided to intervene and reported the couple's behavior to the cabin crew. Prosecutor Maree Doyle informed the magistrates' court in Bristol that, after a brief period, the witness noticed the couple had adjusted some coats over Smith's lap, followed by noticeable hand movements beneath the fabric.
The observer seated adjacent to them was able to witness the unfolding events, while a mother and her teenage daughter positioned behind the couple were also aware of the situation. Ms. Doyle reported that the teenager remarked to her mother, "I can see his bits," which led the irate parent to lodge a complaint as well. Sullivan maintained to the flight attendants that she was merely caressing Smith's leg. However, they were escorted from the aircraft to the tarmac by an easyJet manager and police officers, who initiated a criminal investigation.
Both individuals entered a guilty plea to a single charge of outraging public decency by engaging in a sexual act in a public setting. While sentencing the couple, Judge Lynne Matthews remarked:
“You showed a complete lack of consideration for the feelings of other passengers. “There was a child seated behind you who was able to witness the events that transpired. “Who do you believe you are, and what gives you the right to act in such a manner in full view of others on that flight?”
Smith was mandated to perform 300 hours of community service, while Sullivan, who works as a full-time care worker, was assigned 270 hours. The couple, hailing from Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales, were also instructed to pay £100 in compensation to each of the three witnesses. An easyJet representative stated: “We can confirm that this flight to Bristol was met by police upon arrival due to the conduct of two passengers onboard.”
