LL.M SCHOLARSHIPS LAUNCHED

Qualified lawyers and law graduates wishing to boost their knowledge of global legal practice by studying for a Masters of Law LL.M degree can apply for a new scholarship to help with their fees.

 

The International Bar Association (IBA) and The College of Law are offering four £2,500 awards towards their full-time LL.M in International Legal Practice, which runs at the College’s Moorgate centre from September 2012.

 

This follows the College’s recent launch of scholarships for the full-time Graduate Diploma in Law, Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Course postgraduate programmes, as well as for its new undergraduate LL.B law degree, which starts in September.

 

To apply students must have accepted a place on the September 2012 full-time London LL.M programme by July 20, 2012. They need to submit an essay, short video or other form of digital presentation also by July 20 on the subject: ‘Why the world needs lawyers’.


 

The LL.M in International Legal Practice was launched by the College and IBA in 2007 and was designed with contributions from leading global law firms, including Allen & Overy, DLA Piper and Baker & McKenzie.

 

It provides an internationally recognised practice-focused professional qualification designed to build corporate and cross-border legal knowledge and can be studied either part-time online with one-to-one tutor supervision or, as of 2011, full-time in London. Since the LL.M’s launch in 2007 lawyers from nearly 35 jurisdictions have registered for a total of around 1,700 LL.M modules.

 

Tim Hughes, Deputy Executive Director of the IBA, said: “The practical advantages of this LL.M, in being tutored on how to conduct real cross-border transactions, will broaden the skills of any aspiring young lawyer, and we are delighted to be able to broaden access to it through offering these scholarships.”

 

The IBA is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies while The College of Law, which has eight centres across the UK, is Europe’s largest provider of legal professional education.

The kind of issues and questions that students are asked to address in their scholarship entries include:

• What would the world be like without any lawyers?
• As the law affects everyone – from individuals to big global businesses – in what ways are lawyers essential?
• Why do people need legal advice?
• Will the world need more or less lawyers in the future and what sort of role might they play?

 

Entries will be judged by a panel comprising College of Law and IBA legal professionals who will assess students’ ability to demonstrate a range of professional skills required by modern law firms such as communication, creative and analytical thinking, commercial awareness and a passion for the law.
