King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin announces new association in Saudi Arabia and new partner hire

16 Dec, 2013

King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin announced today (Dec 16) its exclusive association with the Law Office of Majed Almarshad in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The new Riyadh office, which will open on 27 January 2014, will be established by Majed Almarshad, a Saudi qualified senior Corporate lawyer who has been based in King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin’s Dubai office since 2011.  Majed Almarshad will be joined in January by Energy and Infrastructure partner Matthew Cavanagh who has a wealth of international experience in the sector and indeed was previously seconded by Clifford Chance to the Al Jadaan Law Firm in Riyadh.

The combination of Majed and Matthew creates a dynamic and very skilful team of business lawyers supported by the substantial strength of the newly combined King & Wood Mallesons network (King & Wood Mallesons combined with SJ Berwin in November. The combined firms use the name King & Wood Mallesons globally, and King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin in the UK, Continental Europe and the Middle East.)

Rob Day, Managing Partner of King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin, said: “We have assembled a superb team of lawyers in Riyadh led jointly by Majed Almarshad and Matthew Cavanagh that will draw on the firm’s recognised strengths in infrastructure projects, corporate transactions, investment funds, financial regulation and dispute resolution.  We’re increasing seeing Riyadh’s importance as a regional hub for Energy & Infrastructure as well as a key centre of cross-border trade and investment particularly for the broader Middle East, Africa and Asia markets. Our recent combination with King & Wood Mallesons opens up extraordinary opportunities for our clients across the globe who are looking to do business in Saudi Arabia.  It also puts the strength or our global network at the disposal of our Saudi clients.”

The association with Majed Almarshad represents the first time a global law firm headquartered in Asia has established a permanent presence in Saudi Arabia.  It is also the first new office launch since King & Wood Mallesons combined with SJ Berwin in November 2013.  The legacy SJ Berwin firm (now called King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin) has advised clients throughout the Middle East over many years, with the Dubai office, which opened in 2009, recognised as one of the UAE’s strongest legal advisors. With a growing number of clients in Kingdom, the Riyadh office will offer a dedicated regional projects team, as well as a focus on Corporate, International Funds, Dispute Resolution and Financial Services Regulation.

Majed Almarshad said: “I am delighted to welcome King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin to Saudi Arabia.  Together we offer a unique combination of services and experience to clients operating in or from the Kingdom.  I look forward to working with Matthew Cavanagh and the rest of King & Wood Mallesons to build a strong team that is focussed on the needs of our clients and dedicated to delivering timely and dependable advice under Saudi law.”

Matthew Cavanagh said: “King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin impressed me with the strength of its already long standing and broad base of client relationships in the Kingdom and broader GCC. The further investment into Riyadh with Majed Almarshad will make it the first in Kingdom law firm of the new breed of truly international law firms that is able to offer clients the strengths of a market-leading, home grown, global resource not just in the established centres of MENA and Europe, but also in Asia Pacific markets which are increasingly vital to the domestic economies of the Kingdom and broader GCC.”
