GOLDBERG, LOWENSTEIN & WEATHERWAX LLP GROWS FROM THREE TO 25 ATTORNEYS AND CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY

18 Apr, 2013

Goldberg, Lowenstein & Weatherwax LLP (GLW), a boutique law firm charting a new path for the legal profession, is celebrating its one-year anniversary, as well as its rapid expansion from three to 25 attorneys.  GLW has flourished in its first year, not only growing by an order of magnitude, but also adding numerous technical consultants and other professionals, as well as satellite offices in Palo Alto and San Diego.

The three founding partners (all former Irell & Manella attorneys) — Perry Goldberg, Nathan Lowenstein and Kenneth Weatherwax — along with many of the attorneys who have joined GLW, spent the bulk of their careers immersed in “bet the company” patent and intellectual property litigation matters.  Most recently, GLW has expanded its practice areas by establishing an antitrust and competition law group.

“We have a subtle but fundamental shift in how we have imagined and created our law firm.  It’s not that the people are here to serve the firm, the firm is a platform upon which we each are able to build our careers,” said partner Perry Goldberg. “We have generated incredible growth, not only because of our unique philosophy and generous incentive structure, but also because we have created a strong platform that recognizes the importance of giving people freedom and flexibility to control their lives and their careers.”

Attorneys who have joined the firm in the last year include: Jonathan Balfus, Allison Barrows, Cary Berger, Ofer Bleiweiss, Amy Brantly, Clifford Chang, Prof. Aimee Dudovitz, Koral Fusselman, Jarrett Green, Parham Hendifar, Jeremiah Kelman, David Kesselman (Co-Head of antitrust and competition law group), Prof. Daniel Lowenstein, Kara McDonald, Prof. Roman Melnik, Theresa Norton, Jenny Nugent, Roya Rahmanpour, Prof. Betsy Rosenblatt, Dr. Gary Schnittgrund, Trevor Stockinger (Co-Head of antitrust and competition law group), Shant Tchakerian and Valerie Washburn.  GLW has also been bolstered by the addition of highly-skilled Technical Consultants, all of whom have Ph.Ds, including Dr. Jessica Hamerman, Dr. Monica Hinds, Dr. Gary Schnittgrund (who is also an attorney), Dr. Wei Wu, and Dr. Catherine Ye.

Nearly half of GLW’s attorneys previously practiced at Irell & Manella LLP.  Others practiced at leading law firms, such as Skadden; Wilson, Sonsini; Orrick; Blecher & Collins; and Susman Godfrey. GLW’s attorneys also include nine former federal law clerks, including six United States Courts of Appeals clerks. The firms Of Counsel include law professors from UCLA, USC, Loyola and Whittier.  GLW’s five technical advisors hold Ph.Ds in a variety of fields, including electrical engineering, biomedicine and chemistry.

“GLW’s attorneys can determine their own schedules, allowing them to retain flexibility while still ensuring they work on complex matters,” said partner Nathan Lowenstein. “Our clients benefit from this structure as attorneys do not feel pressure to overbill to meet artificially imposed billable hour minimums.  That said, all of our professionals are committed to doing work at the highest level.”

Summing up the first year, GLW partner Ken Weatherwax comments, “We have exceeded our own expectations and are excited about the future.  The sky is the limit.”

GLW currently represents a wide range of clients, from well-established publicly-traded companies to individuals and start-ups, handling numerous patent-related matters, including infringement litigation, licensing, IP due diligence and reexamination matters.  GLW also handles a wide variety of other legal matters, including antitrust, business litigation, election law, entertainment and general transactional work.
