Defamation Bill given Royal Assent
26 Apr, 2013
A bill to reform defamation laws has been given royal assent, meaning that London’s title of ‘Libel Capital of the World’ may soon be misplaced when it passes into law.
The bill, which was the subject of around three years of debate, will see more protection given to those who criticise large corporations and companies.
The House of Lords voted to pass the bill on Tuesday 23rd April by a majority of 78, and it was subsequently given assent by the Queen on Wednesday 25th April, before Parliament prorogued for two weeks.
