Venezuelan President Dies
06 Mar, 2013
Venezuela’s President, Hugo Chavez, has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 58.
Vice-President Nicolas Maduro will take control of the presidency now until the next election takes place within 30 days, although the exact date of the election is not yet known.
Chavez had been battling cancer, the type of which is not known, for the last year. The illness was well-publicised after it prevented him from taking his oath of office after being re-elected as President in October last year.
Opposition leader, Henrique Capriles, has paid tribute to Chavez, saying: “We were adversaries, but never enemies.”
Chavez’s body will now lie in state until his funeral on Friday.
