Marks & Clerk group launches strategic alliance with specialist design consultancy

01 Oct, 2012

Leading international intellectual property group Marks & Clerk has announced a strategic alliance with the product design and development consultancy, Hyphen Design Ltd. Through the group’s consulting arm, Marks & Clerk Consulting LLP, Hyphen Design will offer product development services to UK and overseas based clients of the Group.

The alliance reflects the Marks & Clerk Group’s strategic objective to diversify its services beyond IP protection, litigation and licensing. Launched in March 2012, Marks & Clerk Consulting LLP already provides commercial services complementary to its mainstream legal and IP advisory services, including valuation services and financial analysis for IP royalty audits, licensing negotiations and mediation, patent landscaping and analytics.

Hyphen Design is a leading development and design company specialising in functional products. It has worked with companies such as Ericsson, Schlumberger and B&Q to develop innovative market-leading products. Under the agreement, it will work as part of a Marks & Clerk team in the designing of prototypes and production models or, where IP rights require redesign, in the redesign of existing products and ongoing review of IP rights and protection.

Simon Mounteney (pictured), Partner of Marks & Clerk Consulting LLP, comments: “An area where many clients struggle is in getting from the design concept through the prototype to economic mass production; and often the development process itself fails to identify or maximise the additional IP rights which could be obtained. This alliance enables us to provide a first class proven new product development design service to clients alongside their in-house design team or as a completely outsourced service, and for the first time one which is fully coordinated with IP protection, freedom to operate and exploitation advice.”

Cameron Treeby, Managing Director of Hyphen Design Ltd, adds: “In our experience, whether it be working with entrepreneurs that need a helping hand to make their idea a reality or in-house design teams at large companies, it is extremely important that intellectual property considerations be taken into account throughout the new product development process. This is why it is exciting to be working hand in hand with intellectual property specialists to integrate our respective areas of expertise in one offering.

“There is a natural synergy between us in terms of expertise, ambition, and shared client bases. What is more this alliance presents both Marks & Clerk and Hyphen Design with some fantastic growth opportunities. It is a great fit for both firms.”
