Business law firm DWF has recruited leading EU competition specialist, Jonathan Branton, as national head of EU Competition.

Jonathan has close to 20 years’ experience in all aspects of EU and UK competition law, including restrictive agreements, abuse of dominant position and merger control. Jonathan also has a particularly strong reputation in EU state aid and public procurement law and practice, and a broad experience of handling EU trade defence proceedings, such as anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations, and related World Trade Organisation disputes.

Jonathan, who was previously head of EU Competition at Cobbetts, brings with him extensive experience of the international market, having also practiced at a law firm in Brussels for over ten years. Now based in the UK, Jonathan continues to maintain a regular presence in Brussels through a consistent workload of cases with the European Commission.

Stephen Houston, national head of the corporate and commercial team at DWF, comments: “Jonathan has an excellent reputation in the marketplace, with first class clients and connections. Such wide ranging EU Competition skills and experience are rare and this is an exciting appointment for us. With Jonathan on board, this will strengthen the firm’s current EU competition offering.”

Jonathan’s recent work includes ongoing behavioural competition and state aid investigations carried out by the European Commission. Jonathan has also supported a number of successful bids in national government funding programmes such as the Regional Growth Fund and for other programmes, for example, the EU structural funds (ERDF).

Jonathan comments: “DWF is renowned for its energy and ambition, and following recent expansions across the UK including the Biggart Baillie merger in Scotland, this is a particularly exciting juncture for the firm. DWF offers a great fit for my practice and an ideal platform for taking that and the wider EU Competition team onwards and upwards.”

Jonathan has been consistently applauded by the leading legal directories, described as ‘technically knowledgeable but also understands the practical application of the law’; ‘approachable and flexible’; and most recently as ‘the best State Aid lawyer in the country’.
