Corporate Counsel Middle East Group Recognises Legal Excellence at Inaugural Awards Event

23 May, 2012

Allen & Overy, Al Tamimi & Company, Clifford Chance and Herbert Smith were among the winners at the recent inaugural Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards 2012.

The Middle East legal and business community gathered to celebrate achievement, excellence and innovation in the legal industry at the glittering awards ceremony at The Westin Hotel Dubai.

The Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards 2012, co-hosted by Legal Week and the Corporate Counsel Middle East Group (CCME), was attended by over 300 leading legal professionals both in-house and from local, regional and international law firms across the Middle East. The guest list comprised of companies including DP World, Yahoo!, LG Electronics, FedEx Express and National Bank of Abu Dhabi, in addition to major law firms in the region such as Allen & Overy, Herbert Smith and White & Case.

The winners were chosen by a panel of independent judges, chaired by CCME president Elias Hayek of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide. Categories included General Counsel of the Year, Legal Department of the Year, Legal Team of the Year, Middle East Law Firm of the Year and International Law Firm of the Year.

Al Tayer’s Tim Frost scooped up ‘General Counsel of the Year’ having created one of the region’s most sophisticated legal departments, according to the judging panel. Glowing references, high client satisfaction levels and a broad range of legal work covering the group’s many business streams convinced the judges to also hand the award of ‘Legal Department of the Year’ to Al Tayer’s dynamic legal team.

In winning ‘Middle East Law Firm of the Year’, Al Tamimi & Company impressed a judging panel for being demonstrably and consistently very strong across all areas. Furthermore, the firm was awarded ‘Commercial Team of the Year’ and ‘Corporate Team of the Year.’  Recent highlights include its work advising Coca-Cola’s link up with Aujan Industries, a complex deal which spanned the Middle East and involved 13 companies operating in 10 regions.

Clifford Chance’s focus on building on its existing client relationships and becoming a strategic partner attributed to the firm being awarded ‘International Law Firm of the Year’. As part of the firm’s approach, it offers training to its Middle East clients, many of whom are based in small legal departments.

Among the event’s highlights, UNICEF was presented with a cheque of $10,000 donated by Incisive Media and CCME.

Speaking after a triumphant night for the legal community, CCME president Elias Hayek said: “We have been delighted by the response and enthusiasm for these Awards from both the legal and business community across the Middle East. This year’s winners have demonstrated that in-house legal teams and their external advisers continue to drive growth and innovation, develop new partnerships and complete highly complex deals in challenging conditions.”
