China’s State Intellectual Property Office requests meeting with leading IP firm Marks & Clerk, as part of UK fact-finding trip

A senior delegation of officials from China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) arrived in Edinburgh this morning to meet with senior partners at Marks & Clerk, the international firm of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys.

The meeting was requested by SIPO (Chinese equivalent of the UK Intellectual Property Office), and is part of a wider fact-finding mission to the UK, as the Chinese Government seeks to reform its intellectual property system to encourage inward investment. Discussions centred around the UK and European patent filing process, an area in which Marks & Clerk has long-standing expertise.  The firm also has one of the largest networks of offices across South East Asia in comparison to its peers.

The SIPO delegation met with Bob Naismith, UK Managing Partner; Campbell Newell, Edinburgh Office Managing Partner; and Maureen Kinsler, Partner. The delegation comprises Mr. GAN Shaoning, Deputy Commissioner; Mr. GONG Yalin, Director General, Planning and Development Department; Ms. GAO Kang, Director General, Personnel and Education Department; Mr. DU Jun, Deputy Director General, Patent Search and Consultation Center; Ms. LIU Jufang, Director, Planning and Development Department, Information Management Division; and Ms. QIN Ting, Project Administrator.

Bob Naismith, UK Managing Partner at Marks & Clerk, commented: “We are delighted to welcome the SIPO delegation to Edinburgh, and to have the opportunity of hosting these discussions. The meeting underlines Marks & Clerk’s reputation as a leading IP firm across Europe and Asia.”

Campbell Newell, Office Managing Partner at Marks & Clerk, commented: “Our Edinburgh office acts for a significant number of international clients, as well as servicing the domestic market, so we are well placed to host these discussions with SIPO.  I hope we can contribute to a very successful trip to the UK by the Chinese delegation.”
