17 Chevron and Transocean executives will face criminal charges over a fresh oil leak, close to the site of the last one, Brazilian prosecutors have said.

The US oil company, Chevron, is already facing huge charges over last November’s leak, and has halted production in light of this latest incident which was discovered last week on the ocean floor, off the Brazilian coastline.

Chevron has not commented on legal proceedings as yet, but according to the BBC, Federal prosecutors’ spokesman Marcelo del Negri told the AP news agency that ‘prosecutors would file charges, including “environmental crimes” in a federal court next week’.

Last November’s oil leak saw around 3,000 barrels of oil spilled 370km (240 miles) off the Rio de Janeiro coast, a disaster for which the company is facing multi-billion dollar lawsuits.
