Law firms Sullivan & Cromwell and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett are the top global M&A legal advisors in the world according to a recent report.


Thomson Reuters M&A Legal Reviews for the full year 2011 show that Sullivan & Cromwell and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett top the global legal advisor rankings for announced and completed deals respectively, whilst Linklaters top the Emerging Market rankings.


The report also shows that worldwide M&A increased by 7 per cent to $2.6 trillion while Private Equity M&A was up by 32 per cent over 2010.


Linklaters has been reported as being at the top of the Emerging Market rankings, while the report also shows that the Emerging Markets M&A announced in 2011 accounted for 26 per cent of global activity and reached US$667.4 billion, representing a 13.6 per cent decrease compared to 2010.


In addition, the report shows that Energy and Power was the most active sector during the year, accounting for 21.3 per cent of Emerging Market volumes with US$141.9billion in deal activity, closely followed by Materials with US$136.4 billion.
