Freshfields appoints Pervez Akhtar regional managing partner for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)
Previously head of the firm’s MENA corporate practice, Pervez brings extensive corporate and corporate finance experience to the role. He is widely recognised as a leading specialist in the region, acting for a wide range of local and international clients, including FTSE 100 companies, private equity houses, financial institutions, NYSE/NASDAQ-listed US corporates, government bodies and sovereign wealth funds.
His move comes as the firm also announced the relocation to Dubai of Jonathan Rawlings, a partner in the London Dispute Resolution group, to strengthen the firm’s global investigations and disputes offering in the region.
Pervez succeeds Bertrand Pellet, and in commenting on the appointment, Freshfields’ senior partner, Will Lawes, said: ‘Bertrand has played a key role in cementing Freshfields’ reputation as a leading law firm in the region. Pervez’s legal expertise, combined with his in-depth understanding of the local market, will build on this work, enabling us to grow and take full advantage of the opportunities in this active market.’
Pervez Akhtar says, ‘MENA is a very important market for the firm given its strategic location and resilient economies. We have a strong multi-practice offering which, despite a prolonged global slowdown, has grown markedly over the last few years and provides top quality legal advice to businesses investing into the region and to local corporates and funds looking offshore.’
