The financial sector saved Malta from suffering a fate such as Ireland or Greece as the initial six months of 2010 saw the financial industry increase its contribution to €214 million, making up 20% of national revenue. It is rumoured that if the Maltese financial sector continues as it has in 2010, it will soon overtake the contribution of the national tourism industry. Another area that contributes predominately to the Maltese revenue is the maritime industry. With its location in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea it is no surprise that Malta has developed one of the world’s largest ship registers in modern times, in the face of stiff competition from other prominent maritime nations.
